Rangel and Trump are PALs
Volunteering with the Police Athletic League is considered a perk at the New York Police Department. Especially during the summer, when it gets police officers outdoors to ball fields and recreation centers throughout the five boroughs.
“My officers love to do it,” a chief in the department, Douglas Ziegler, said.
Mr. Ziegler was among the believers in PAL who turned out for its 35th annual Superstar Dinner Tuesday at the Pierre Hotel.
Perhaps the biggest star of them all was Donald Trump, who served as the event’s chairman. He donated $100,000, provided Trump vodka, magazines, and chocolate bars for the gift bags, and brought along his wife Melania and son, Donald Jr., — but, alas, not the new Miss Universe he had crowned the night before in Mexico City, Riyo Mori of Japan.
The event honored Rep. Charles Rangel, a Democrat of New York, who praised the league for helping New York’s children become better Americans. On hand to praise his efforts on behalf of all Americans were the league’s chairman, the district attorney for Manhattan, Robert Morgenthau, and its honorary president, the city’s police commissioner, Raymond Kelly.
Many guests scrambled to have their photograph taken with Mr. Rangel, who dutifully gave his signature broad smile. The sight of it made at least one guest extremely happy: Mr. Rangel’s dentist, Maryann Riordon.
