A Hamptons One-Night Stand That Should Be an Annual Fling
It was a dancer’s fantasy: stretch and warm up next to the swimming pool, make one’s stage entrance through a lush garden, and then dance in perfect early evening light under a clear blue sky while surrounded by trees whose turning and twisting branches echoed one’s own movements.
In East Hampton Saturday, this was a reality for the Armitage Gone! Dance Company, thanks to interior designer Tony Ingrao and his partner, Randy Kemper, who gave the company the use of their estate on Huntting//SP CQ//Lane.
For some, the performance was a cap to a lazy day at the beach. For others, it was an early stop on the party circuit. For all, the setting, with its whimsical garden statuary was an inspiration.
The event was a one-time presentation of Guild Hall, whose theater is under renovation, but at least one person who saw the performance felt that, should anyone choose to maintain the stage and find other dance companies to perform there, the East End could become a destination for dance to rival the Berkshires’s Jacob’s Pillow. There are plenty of New York-based companies that would benefit from the exposure — both to sun and surf and potential patrons who summer on Long Island.
