Outrage Over Rama Duwaji’s Social Media Activity Leads to Demands for More Daylight Between New York City Mayor and His Spouse

New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is facing renewed criticism, being labeled guilty by association for his wife’s amplification of social media posts glorifying and celebrating the October 7, 2023, slaughter of Israelis by Hamas.Jewish Insider was first to report that Rama Duwaji has a long history of liking posts on social media calling the widespread sexual violence on October 7 a “mass rape hoax” and the attacks as “collective liberation” from Israel’s “walls of apartheid and military occupation.”A deep dive into her social media presence by the Free Press also found that Ms. Duwaji follows several anti-Israel Instagram accounts, including that of “Gaza_Shaheed,” which shares images and stories of Gaza “martyrs,” a term used for suicide bombers and other fighters killed in conflict.A Houston-born Syrian-American who spent most of her youth outside the United States, Ms. Duwaji also follows Gazan Bisan Owda, an Emmy, Peabody, and Edward R. Murrow-award winner who has been linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a foreign terrorist-designated organization. Asked Friday about his wife’s predilection for violent anti-Israel posts and handles, Mr. Mamdani responded by calling Ms. Duwaji the “love of my life.” “She’s also a private person who has held no formal position on my campaign or in my City Hall,” he said. While as a “private person,” Ms. Duwaji has been featured in the New York Times and New York Magazine, Mr. Mamdani himself has a long history of support for Palestinian statehood and anti-Israel activism like the boycott, divest, and sanction movement. Mr. Mamdani was a member of Students for Justice in Palestine at Bowdoin University.Mr. Mamdani also has repeatedly accused Israel of violating international law and said he would arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he showed up in New York City because of a pending arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court. He also has used protest language such as “globalize the intifada.” Though Mr. Mamdani once called the terror attacks of October 7 “a horrific war crime,” he and Ms. Duwaji have both used the 2023 attacks to encourage focus on Gaza and the “genocide” by Israel. Ms. Duwaji’s political perspective has never been a secret. In October Ms. Duwaji shared a post mourning the death of a Hamas propagandist, Saleh al-Jaafari, who was killed in Palestinian internecine fighting after Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza last year. Actor Michael Rapaport, who plans to run for mayor of New York City in the next election and traveled to Israel to see the evidence of the massacres, called Mr. Mamdani and Ms. Duwaji not just pro-Palestine, but “pro-massacre.”“New York City, we’ve got a problem and it’s not just the mayor. The whole household is sick,” Mr. Rapaport posted on X, describing the couple’s viewpoints as identical. “You share a bed and you share the same rhetoric as your wife. … Your wife is you.” Others took more sinister views of Ms. Duwaji, who grew up in Dubai where her mother was a pediatrician. The bestselling author, Naomi Wolf, said Ms. Duwaji’s supporting sentiments in favor of the massacre is equivalent to condoning violence against Jews. “Rama Duwaji conspired in the communication of a threat. It’s a criminal offense,” Ms. Wolf posted on X.
