PGA Tour’s Bold New Format Leaves Bryson DeChambeau with Uncertain Future

Professional golf is undergoing a seismic, structural evolution and it appears increasingly likely that it will leave one of its most polarizing figures buried in his own divot.While Bryson DeChambeau publicly bemoans the disappearance of his golf game that has gone from major contender to weekend spectator, the PGA Tour appears ready to move on without him. In a display of institutional strength, the tour has finalized a revolutionary, two series competitive structure that is being enthusiastically endorsed by the sport’s most prominent stars.Starting in 2028, the PGA Tour will debut a Championship Series, featuring top players competing for purses of at least $20 million per event with fields of about 120 players. Running concurrently will be a second-tier PGA Tour Challenger Series with fields of 144 players competing for purses of at least $4 million. Both series will have a 36-hole cut.A pathway to promotion and relegation between the two series will be based on performance adding value to every tournament. Championship Series players are not required to compete in all top-tier events but are prohibited from entering Challenger Series tournaments.“I think it’s really good,” the world’s top-ranked player, Scottie Scheffler, said at the Travelers Championship. “I think it’s easier for our fans to follow. I think the competition will get better. When you look at larger fields it will be much harder to win tournaments.”Two-time U.S. Open winner Wyndham Clark said he also likes the changes. “It seems like golf is in a great place and that our team and representatives are making the necessary changes I think that are going to lead the tour into an amazing place for the future,” he said. “I’m all aboard. I think it’s awesome.”What About Bryson?With the PGA Tour focused on its future, no lingering gazes remain toward LIV Golf defectors like Mr. DeChambeau, who left the tour in 2022. He accepted a reported $100 million to join the rival league then headed by Greg Norman and Phil Mickelson. Now LIV Golf has lost the financial backing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and needs a $300 million influx of capital if it’s going to survive.Mr. DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open winner and one of the more popular golfers in the sport, is in the final year of his contract with LIV, but has made no indication he plans to pursue a path back to the PGA Tour similar to what Brooks Koepka did earlier this year.While it was initially believed the PGA Tour would covet his return, Mr. DeChambeau sounded cocky suggesting he might prefer growing his YouTube channel of 2.7 million followers. He then embarrassed himself by missing the cut at the last three major championships.In a recent social media post, Mr. DeChambeau expressed his frustration over his recent poor performances at the Masters, PGA Championship, and the U.S. Open. “We could say it’s unlucky; we could say bad judgement; we could say bad swings and all that, but ultimately it comes down to me making better decisions,” he said.The Championship Series is about the best players competing against the best players on a consistent basis beyond the majors. That’s the primary objective most players wanted. “That’s obviously a great thing from a fan perspective and playing perspective,” the reigning Fed Ex Cup champion, Tommy Fleetwod, told reporters at the Travelers. “You get to play against each other all the time. There’s a lot of golf, a lot of intensity, and you just have to keep learning how to manage that as best as possible.”Mr. DeChambeau hasn’t played well against the best lately. He missed that cut at six over par at the Masters and missed the cut again shooting seven over during the two days at the PGA Championship. He missed the cut at the recent U.S. Open, shooting five over in the second round at Shinnecock Hills.His collapse on golf’s biggest stages is in contrast to a year ago when he missed the cut at only one major, the 2025 U.S. Open. He played in the final group at the 2025 Masters won by Rory McIlroy. He was tied for second at the PGA Championship and tied for 10th at the British Open.But at a time when the CEO of LIV Golf, Scott O’Neil, is shopping for global investors, his sales pitch is being undermined by a brutal reality: LIV’s biggest, most expensive marquee names are failing to validate the league’s quality.While Mr. DeChambeau has been a major flop in 2026, the 2021 U.S. Open and 2023 Masters champion, Jon Rahm, also missed the cut at Shinnecock after tying for 38th at the Masters and earning a respectable tie for second at the PGA Championship. As a result, Messrs. DeChambeau and Rahm have become after-thoughts, while the PGA Tour reshapes its brand with no real interest in LIV Golf or its current players.YouTube IntrusionMr. DeChambeau has denied that growing his YouTube Channel and playing LIV Golf has hurt his preparation for major championships. “Look everybody’s going to have their opinion on it,” he said on his social media post. “But I can tell you I’ve been working harder on my game this past year after the Masters, than I have in the past three, four years. The amount of effort I’ve put into understanding my golf swing and what makes the golf club come out more effectively, more efficiently is mind-boggling. But I haven’t figured it out.”“Just last year I was one of the best major championship performers in the world,” he continued. “One year later, everybody says I’m the worst. It just is what it is.”PGA Tour is Ready to Move OnOne player director on the tour’s board and a member of the Future Competition Committee that Tiger Woods chairs, Maverick McNealy, told Golfweek the new format will lead to a cleaner and more competitive schedule. “The players are most passionate about maintaining the integrity and the history of our PGA Tour competition,” Mr. McNealy said. “We have the best competition in the golf ecosystem, and I think that’s one of the reasons you saw our tour succeed over the last couple of years when a certain tour might not have. We dug our heels in pretty hard on anything that was going to disrupt that.”From Challenger to ChampionAlthough the Challenger Series does not replace the developmental Korn Ferry Tour, it will operate in a similar manner. Elevated points will be compiled in a season-long race, with the top 20 in the points standings promoted to the Championship Series each year. Also, any player who wins two Challenger Series events in one season will immediately earn promotion to the Championship Series.Sites, venues, and other details are still being finalized.“We really went through a pretty formulaic process to figure it all out,” Mr. McNealy said. “It all started with all the key parties — the media partners, sponsors, fans, and obviously the players — and (we) really figured out what everyone wanted to see if they had a blank sheet of paper and could draw up the perfect PGA Tour. I’m really confident that the proposal that was just voted on addressed most, if not all, of that.”LIV Golf does not resume its schedule for another month, meaning Mr. DeChambeau’s next appearance will be at the season’s final major, the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in England starting July 16. His performance there could determine who holds the power in his next conversation with the PGA Tour.
