President Trump Admonishes Israel Over Fighting Iran’s Lebanese Proxy

As American and Iranian officials are set to officially sign a memorandum of understanding in Switzerland on Friday, the question of Lebanon and, relatedly, Israel’s exclusion from the negotiations, could easily unravel the agreement.President Trump widened his rift with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. Sitting next to the Emir of Qatar, Tamim al-Thani, the president said that Israel’s war against Hezbollah is taking too long and exacting too many uninvolved casualties. He indicated that he no longer trusts Israel and its fight with Hezbollah. “I suggested to Israel to let Syria take care of it,” Mr. Trump told reporters at a press conference in France. He said that the “very capable” former jihadist Syrian president, Ahmad a-Shara, could take care of Hezbollah. “If Israel can’t do the job without killing everyone else, he’ll do the job,” Mr. Trump said, “Syria will do the job.”In a stunning admission at a news conference on Monday, meanwhile, Mr. Netanyahu said he did not know what is in the American-Iranian Memorandum of Understanding that was signed electronically by top American and Iranian officials on Monday. Israel, Mr. Netanyahu said, will do what it needs to for its security. Hezbollah and its patrons at Tehran are making clear that their war against the Jewish state is far from over, and that they are emboldened by the American rift with Israel. The MoU, according to one leaked version, opens with a declaration that “the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, together with their allies in the current war, declare upon the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding an immediate and permanent end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.”If that version is correct, “America is authorizing Hezbollah to continue its terrorist operations in the region and the Western world,” the founder of Middle East Media Research, Yigal Carmon, tells the Sun. “No force in the world — not Iran and not America that now seems to place itself just under the Islamic Republic — can stop Israel from defending itself.” Shortly after Mr. Trump, Vice President Vance, and Tehran’s speaker of parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, e-signed the MoU on Monday, Hezbollah attacked in southern Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Forces “intercepted several rockets launched by the terrorist organization Hezbollah toward the area where IDF forces operate in southern Lebanon,” the army said in a statement posted on X. Mr. Netanyahu, in his press conference, made clear that the IDF will remain stationed inside Lebanon, where the IDF is holding a 7.5 mile-wide security belt. An Iranian proxy, Hezbollah, has held sway over Beirut politics for decades. Some of the funds, including from Qatar, which reportedly are scheduled to fill dwindling Iranian coffers are widely presumed to eventually be used to regain losses Hezbollah endured in two years of war. And what about Washington’s recent attempts at striking a Jerusalem-Beirut peace deal?Since the Lebanese government authorized representatives to negotiate with Israeli officials about disarming Hezbollah and ending the state of war with Israel, President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam have withstood death threats from the Shiite terror organization and its Beirut allies. Will America forsake them for the sake of appeasing Tehran?“The Shiites of Hezbollah — politicians, pundits, influencers — are behaving as if they have won the war, and are now demanding that Aoun, Salam, foreign minister Youssef Rajji, and anyone who defied Iran or demanded Hezbollah’s disarmament either resign or be ousted,” a research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Hussain Abdul-Hussain, tells the Sun.The terror organization is now demanding a reversal of government decisions on disarmament of Hezbollah and banning its military activities, Mr. Abdul-Hussain, who grew up in Lebanon, adds. Instead, Hezbollah is demanding that Lebanon endorse the “resistance” — Tehran’s term for its proxies attacks against Israel. “No one can stand against Hezbollah in Lebanon, and everything you have seen from Hezbollah in Lebanon is only the tip of the iceberg,” the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’s Quds Force, Esmail Qaani, wrote on X Monday. While the MoU’s top reported achievement is a promise to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping, General Qaani is threatening to close another crucial shipping lane, at the mouth of the Red Sea. “Bab al-Mandab is one of the winning cards of the Resistance Front, and if necessary, other cards will also be revealed,” the general writes. “Wherever you confronted the resistance, you were left with no dignity.”
