The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday approved an application by the Parks Department to demolish the 1936 Purchase Building located beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.
The space will be cleared to make way for construction of the new 85-acre, $150 million Brooklyn Bridge Park, set to begin in 2007.
“We’re excited to complete the design and begin construction there shortly,” a spokesman for the Parks Department, Warner Johnston, said.
The commission’s vote, 7-to-2 in favor of the demolition, was based on a finding that the building was outside the period of significance for the district, and that the overall benefit of demolition – such as more open views at the base of the bridge – outweighed the benefits of preservation.
