Last-Place Blue Jays Jump on Mussina, Yankees

TORONTO – Carlos Delgado homered in Toronto’s five run seventh inning and the Blue Jays ended a five-game losing skid with a 6-4 win over the Yankees yesterday after a power outage delayed the start for about an hour.
Mike Mussina remained winless in four starts since coming back from an elbow injury that sidelined him for nearly six weeks. He gave up five runs and five hits in 6 1 /3 innings. The Yankees have gotten just one win from their starting pitchers in the last 15 games.
Miguel Batista (10-10) won for the first time since July 23 – a span of seven starts – and allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings.
Jason Frasor gave up a solo homer to pinch-hitter Jorge Posada in the ninth before finishing for his 17th save in 18 chances.
Alex Rodriguez went 4-for-4 with a homer and a walk for the Yankees, whose lead over Boston in the AL East dropped to 4 1 /2 games – their smallest margin since June 23.
With approximately 11,000 fans in the stands 60 minutes before the game, SkyDome went black for a few moments before the emergency lights came on. A spokesman for Hydro One, an Ontario power company, said a raccoon might have caused an insulator to blow at a nearby power station.
Thousands of fans were stuck waiting outside the ballpark while the lights inside were out. Attendance was 44,072,Toronto’s largest home crowd since opening day.
Reed Johnson hit a leadoff homer against Mike Mussina (9-8), helping the last-place Blue Jays improve to 3-10 against the Yankees.
Down 2-1 in the seventh, Toronto sent nine to the plate. Delgado led off with a homer off Mussina. After Eric Hinske reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second, Gabe Gross chased Mussina with a go-ahead single.
Johnson added an RBI single off Paul Quantrill, and Orlando Hudson hit a run-scoring single to shortstop Derek Jeter, whose throw to second sailed into right field for an error, allowing Johnson to score Toronto’s sixth run.
