Third seed Amelie Mauresmo chewed up Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova 6-1 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the third straight year.
Vaidisova, the 16th seed, handed the gifted Frenchwoman Mauresmo the match with an incredible 34 unforced errors in just 52 minutes of tennis in their fourth round match on Rod Laver Arena.
Mauresmo made only two errors in a clinical display.
A finalist here in 1999, Mauresmo broke the 16-year-old’s serve three times in the opening set, the last time when Vaidisova made three errors to hand her the opener. Vaidisova, who also reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year, never recovered.
Mauresmo charged through the second set as Vaidisova self-destructed to set up a quarter-final against either seventh seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland or 12th-seeded Russian Anastasia Myskina, who played in the late session last night.
