METS SIGN RELIEVER BRADFORD Reliever Chad Bradford agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract with the Mets yesterday following a season marked by back surgery and his trade from Oakland to Boston. The 31-year-old right-hander did not allow a run in 23 of his 31 appearances. He appeared in 21 games for Boston following his midseason trade.The 6-foot-5-inch Bradford was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 21 games with the Red Sox. He had lower back surgery in March and began last season on Oakland’s disabled list. He was dealt to Boston for outfielder Jay Payton on July 13. In all, Bradford has a 23-16 record and seven saves with a 3.49 ERA.
WHITE SOX INK GARLAND TO THREE-YEAR DEAL Pitcher Jon Garland agreed to a three-year, $29 million contract yesterday with the champion Chicago White Sox. Garland, who was eligible to become a free agent after the 2006 season, went 18-10 with a 3.50 ERA and led the AL in shutouts last season with the White Sox. He threw three complete games and had 115 strikeouts in 32 starts. Garland is 64-61 with a 4.42 ERA in 181 career games over six big league seasons, all with the White Sox.

BOSTON COLLEGE TOPS BOISE ST. IN MPC COMPUTERS BOWL Matthew Ryan and Ryan Glasper spoiled Boise State coach Dan Hawkins last game with the Broncos, leading no. 19 Boston College to a 27-21 win yesterday in the MPC Computers Bowl. Ryan threw three first-half touchdown passes, and Glasper intercepted Jared Zabransky’s pass in the end zone with 37 seconds left as the Broncos tried to complete a rally from a 27-0 deficit.
The Eagles (9-3) extended the nation’s longest bowl winning streak to six and snapped Boise State’s 31-game home winning streak. B.C.’s last bowl loss was to Colorado in the 1999 Insight Bowl,and Boise State’s last home loss was in 2001 – a 41-20 loss to Washington State in Hawkins’ first home game after taking over for Dirk Koetter. This game was Hawkins’s last with the Broncos (9-4), who failed to win 10 games for the first time since 2001. He’s headed to Colorado after signing a five-year deal.

BILLICK TO RETURN AS RAVENS COACH Brian Billick will return as coach of the Baltimore Ravens next year, the result of owner Steve Bisciotti’s belief that continuity is the best way for the team to end a run of two straight disappointing seasons. Baltimore missed the playoffs in 2004, and this season the Ravens are assured their third losing record in Billick’s seven years as head coach. But the Ravens (6-9) also have won four of their last six.
Billick led Baltimore to a Super Bowl victory after the 2000 season, guiding the wild-card entrant to a 34-7 rout of the Giants on January 28, 2001. He is 61-42 overall, including his three postseason appearances.

NUGGETS’ CAMBY OUT INDEFINITELY The Denver Nuggets suffered another major setback yesterday when they learned center Marcus Camby, the NBA’s leading rebounder, will be out indefinitely with a broken right pinkie. Camby will need surgery on the finger, after which a timeline for his return will be set. He averages 16.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, and is second in the league with 3.12 blocks a game.
