Stocks Are Pointing to a GOP Midterm Victory

President Trump is a quintessential optimist, which is the mark of a great leader.When I asked him in our White House interview if he could beat history in the midterm elections, and keep the House and Senate in Republican hands, he said yes.Indeed, he said he was going to change history by winning the midterms. And he reiterated that we have the hottest country anywhere in the world, and he would do his best to get the word out on what he called “the greatest economy in history.”Today’s January jobs report is giving him a leg up, as private payrolls came in about twice what the consensus expected at 172,000.And Mr. Trump talked a lot about factories in our interview.And sure enough, construction jobs surged 33,000 in January. Pretty good for a bad-weather month. And the unemployment rate dropped to 4.3 percent. And the small-business household employment number was a staggering gain of 528,000.And manufacturing wages jumped alongside a big increase in hours worked. So now the three-month change in the wage-income proxy has increased to 5.6 percent at an annual rate, way above the core CPI, which, for the three months ending December, was only 1.6 percent. Talk about affordability.It’s jumping by leaps and bounds in this Trump boom.So the election’s not until November and this is only February, but I’d say the optimistic Mr. Trump is in better shape than people may think.The Gallup poll reports an upturn to 49 percent-36 percent in favor of an improving economy.Mr. Trump has been getting the word out in a bunch of speeches, including his White House speech in mid-December and his Davos speech three weeks ago, and my interview with him, which was on Monday at White House’s Roosevelt room.He’s betting on the economy to carry the GOP over the finish line this fall.I think it’s a very good bet. And here’s another interesting nugget from our optimistic president. He talked about Dow 50,000 — well that’s a big deal.He got there in about a year; most people thought he’d be lucky to get there in four years.Well, the productivity and profits-led stock market rally is of course a harbinger of a big 2026 economy.Yet the stock market has political content as well. It can be a good indicator of the health and wealth of the country.The market certainly likes Trumpian policies of lower taxes, deregulation, energy dominance, and reciprocal trade. If the bull market continues, it’s going to be telling us that Mr. Trump’s optimism is right on track.From Mr. Kudlow’s broadcast on Fox Business Network.
