Teenager Wins Chinese Grand Prix, but War Puts Brakes on F1’s Fast Start

The tears streaming down Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s boyish face told the story of an improbable dream coming true. The 19-year-old Italian prodigy delivered a moment that Formula 1 has been waiting for on Sunday, becoming the second-youngest driver to win a Grand Prix while ending a 20-year drought for Italian drivers atop the podium.Mr. Antonelli fought back emotion after winning the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai by holding off Mercedes teammate George Russell, who crossed second, and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who earned his first podium for Ferrari by finishing third. For Mr. Antonelli, the victory carries even deeper significance. The emotional triumph marked the first Grand Prix victory by an Italian driver since 2006, a milestone that instantly transformed the teenager into one of the sport’s brightest new stars. It also highlights Mercedes’ early dominance under the sweeping 2026 regulations that place increased emphasis on electrical power. For the second consecutive race, Mercedes finished first and second — the reverse of the season opener in Melbourne, where Mr. Russell stood on the top step and Mr. Antonelli on the second.“I said I really wanted to bring Italy back on top and we did it,” Mr. Antonelli said. “We’re just at the beginning. We just have to keep pushing. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”So are those who market F1 and Apple TV in its first year as the American distributor of the sport. The result delivered one of the most compelling early narratives in years — a teenage race winner, a dominant Mercedes resurgence and the sport’s most recognizable star, who may or may not be dating Kim Kardashian, climbing the podium in Ferrari red.Celebration of the break-through victory has been tempered by the cancellation of two Middle Eastern races because of the escalating conflict in the Persian Gulf. Formula 1 officials confirmed this weekend the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which were scheduled to be held in April. After what officials described as “careful evaluations,” the series concluded it was not safe to hold races in Bahrain or Saudi Arabia amid the widening conflict in the Middle East. The Bahrain race at the Sakhir circuit had been scheduled for April 10-12, while the event in Jeddah was slated for the following week.Neither race will be rescheduled, reducing the 2026 calendar to 22 events. The cancellations also create an unexpected five-week gap between the Japanese Grand Prix at the end of March and the Miami Grand Prix in early May.Formula 1’s president and chief executive officer, Stefano Domenicali, acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. “While this was a difficult decision to take, it is unfortunately the right one at this stage considering the current situation in the Middle East,” Mr. Domenicali said. For a sport that thrives on momentum, the timing of the interruption could hardly be worse. The early portion of the season has already produced compelling themes: Mercedes, finishing first and second for the second straight race to reclaim its position at the front, Mr. Antonelli emerging as the breakout star of the championship, and Mr. Hamilton capturing headlines in Ferrari colors. Now, instead of building on that excitement, the championship will pause for more than a month. The chief executive of the Bahrain International Circuit, Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, said the country would welcome Formula 1 back when circumstances allow. “We fully support the decision by Formula 1,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming fans from all around the world back to Bahrain when F1 returns.”The Saudi sports minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that the kingdom had been prepared to host the race once again in Jeddah. “Saudi Arabia was fully prepared to host the race,” he said. “We want the international sporting community to know that the Kingdom remains a trusted partner and destination for global sport.”The conflict had already disrupted the season’s opening weeks. Travel complications forced teams, officials and members of the press to scramble for alternate routes to the Australian Grand Prix after regional airspace closures disrupted flights through major transit hubs such as Dubai and Doha.At least for now, F1 can focus on its new star. “A huge congratulations to Kimi,” Mr. Russell said. “It’s always special to win your first race. He’s been driving amazing this year and this weekend.”Meanwhile Mr. Hamilton’s third-place finish marked another milestone. It was the 203rd podium of his career and his first in the team’s iconic red after leaving Mercedes in 2024.
