The Pillars Supporting America’s Left Are Collapsing

One by one, the pillars of the American left are crashing down. The latest, the Southern Poverty Law Center, has been accused of assisting organizations that it opposes and denounces. It has been comprehensively indicted for numerous tax and financial transgressions. And it is incidentally exposed as inventing the unctuous fraud that President Trump had whitewashed Nazis in the 2017 controversy over the statue of General Robert E. Lee at Charlottesville.In a piquant side-show, a former officer SPLC has been specifically accused of felonies, and as frequently happens in the United States, prosecutors managed to put embarrassing allegations into the public domain, in this case that the same defendant has been engaged in a prodigious romantic affair with a prominent American Nazi.To be sure, these are only charges and the SPLC deserves the presumption of innocence, but the fact that the justice department is confident enough to make these charges and that they are not implausible, is a serious embarrassment. This was an organization founded with heroic fanfare by the late Julian Bond and others. And it got a free first class passage from the leftist press to the day that the indictment dropped, although it has been obvious for years that many of their hobby horses were just partisan smear operations. Much more shocking, because of the scale of its activities and the immense power and prestige, almost cultic status, the-anti Trump press conferred on Dr. Anthony Fauci, was his pathetic recent performance before a congressional committee. Dr. Fauci was for 38 years the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. None of this reduces the suspicion that was widespread at the time, that the Democrats in the Congress demanded a comprehensive shutdown in the country in order to create an economic depression that they could blame on Mr. Trump.That these offenses were not so much partisan, and Dr. Fauci is only accused of making mistakes and not of having been a fully paid-up member of anti-Trump officialdom, takes nothing from the gravity of Dr. Fauci’s errors. He went a long way with the falsehood that Covid originated accidentally in a market when he had himself authorized contributions to the development of gain of function research in Communist China’s Wuhan laboratory, where many now have good reason to believe it did originate.The Health and Human Services secretary, Robert Kennedy Jr., estimated that incompetent treatment of Covid cost one million American lives unnecessarily. Even some poor Third World countries that had nothing except the natural resistance population as a defense against Covid had a better record than America. Allison Robbert/APDr. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times, even including in response to utterly innocuous questions such as the color of his necktie and of the hearing room carpet. The country vividly recalls the unshakable self-confidence with which he urged six feet of space between people and the use of up to two masks at a time, both precautions that are now known to be unnecessary and absurd.Even more shocking though not always entirely relevant are entries in his diary beginning “Dear Diary,” and patting himself on the back for his renown and authority. The unmistakable facts are that Dr. Fauci made catastrophic errors and his negligence makes him complicit in the unnecessary deaths of a great many people. The entire Democratic Party press effort to demand the total shutdown of the country, is also to blame for the resulting economic hardship on the president, and this has been laid bare. Perhaps the worst wrongdoers have been the teachers and particularly the teachers’ principal union leader, Randy Weingarten, whose 23 years as a member of the Democratic National Committee was only disclosed when she retired.We now know that it was completely unnecessary to shut the schools, which had been chronically under-performing for the country for decades. The insistence of the teachers on working virtually from home, we now know, dealt a terrible blow to the education and social maturation of scores of tens of millions of American school children. BLM has lost approximately half of its support in the last several years and public esteem and support for all of them and the biases and collective gullibility that supported them have finally collapsed.This is happening as the Democrats are in an internecine death struggle with themselves for the direction of their party. They may have given the Michigan Senate seat to the Republican by nominating Abdul El-Sayed, and even given away the Minnesota seat by nominating indigenous Marxist Peggy Flanagan. By bringing these extreme candidates forward, the Democrats are playing Russian roulette with all chambers loaded.Mr. Trump appears to have settled on the correct strategy with Iran, of a tight blockade of Iran while about 75 percent of the normal oil exports of the region are coming out under sponsorship of the United States Navy through the Strait of Hormuz, and by increased use of existing pipelines. About a third of what is not going through is Iranian oil, largely bound for China. This is a policy of economic strength that does not cost the United States significant expense or resources nor any casualties. Mr. Trump is effectively pretending the war is just an enforced boycott, while Iran claims victory while it is strangled. This policy may not much influence the vote in November. Even so, Mr. Trump may be setting up a productive last two years for his presidency.
