The Toyota Rav4 Is The Perfect Car for the Moment

Toyota is either the luckiest company in the world or it possesses a secret technology that allows it to see into the future.The world’s largest automaker spent the past few years absorbing a fusillade of criticism for slow-walking the transition to electric vehicles while other brands raced to introduce them. But today it is having the last laugh.The American electric vehicle industry took a sharp turn last year when the government support and regulatory pressure that had been promoting it were abruptly discontinued. Many automakers were left holding the bag and staring at huge financial losses as the true level of organic demand was unmasked. Multibillion-dollar electric vehicle programs were canceled outright, and internal combustion was back in style.Unfortunately, the reset began just as the oil markets were about to be rattled and gas prices driven to near-record highs. That got some fickle car shoppers interested in EVs again, but the drawbacks that kept them from owning one in the first place hadn’t changed. What they really wanted were fuel-efficient, affordable hybrids.As it turns out, that is exactly what Toyota had been working on all along. Nearly every model in its lineup is available in a hybrid version, and now its two best-sellers only come that way. The Camry sedan made the switch when it was updated for 2025, and the Rav4 SUV followed it this year.The Rav4 is Toyota’s most popular model and has been the bestselling vehicle in America that isn’t a large pickup truck since 2017. It has also been battling for the world title with the Tesla Model Y in recent years.Toyota first offered the Rav4 as a hybrid a decade ago alongside traditional gas models and added a plug-in hybrid version in 2021. With the electrified models growing to account for roughly half of Rav4 sales, which stressed supplies, Toyota decided to go all-in when it redesigned the Rav4 for 2026.The compact crossover SUV features fresh styling, but has resisted bloat and remains the same size as the one it replaces. It isn’t the largest vehicle in its class, but it is comfortable for four tall passengers and has a very large cargo area.Toyota Rav4 cargo: The Rav4 has one of the largest cargo areas among compact crossover SUVs.The hybrid powertrain has been updated, but keeps its classic configuration. The combination of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and a continuously variable transmission powers the front wheels and charges the battery, while all-wheel-drive models add a third electric motor for the rear wheels. There is no driveshaft or other mechanical connection between the two ends as their operation is synced electronically.Fuel economy ranges from 41 mpg combined with all-wheel drive to 43 mpg with front-wheel drive. That is up from the old non-hybrid’s best of 30 mpg and neatly tracks the increase in gas prices over the past year, so the miles per dollar figure remains the same … for now.The plug-in hybrid Rav4 isn’t on sale yet and doesn’t have an official EPA rating, but Toyota estimates that it will be able to travel up to 52 miles in all-electric mode before the gas engine needs to engage, so owners can choose whichever energy source is cheaper or more convenient on any given day.Toyota Rav4 cabin: The Rav4 Limited features dual digital displays and SofTex synthetic upholstery.Prices for the standard hybrid Rav4s range from $33,495 on the low end to $44,895 for a top-of-the-line Limited, like the one I recently tested. They are all mechanically the same, with trim and features being the differentiators. Power is a peppy, if not sporty, 226 horsepower in front-wheel-drive models and 236 horsepower in all-wheel-drive models.All Rav4s are equipped with a suite of electronic aids that provide pedestrian-detecting automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-centering adaptive cruise control. A Proactive Driving Assist is also included, which can be set to slow the vehicle smoothly for turns if it thinks the speed is too high or gently brake for obstacles before things reach emergency levels. It is something you can feel working, but in a helpful, rather than obtrusive fashion.The Rav4’s ride quality is always excellent, even when the pavement isn’t, and Toyota’s efforts to reduce wind and road noise with this generation have paid off handsomely. If you could swap the SofTex synthetic upholstery for genuine leather, it could pass for a luxury car.There is no shortage of compact crossover competitors for the Rav4 in what is the hottest vehicle segment today. That includes the Honda CR-V, which sits right behind the Toyota on the sales charts and is available as a hybrid, but not exclusively. Honda is one of those automakers that just gave up on EVs. But a funny thing is happening at Toyota. After all this time, it is adding a full lineup of four all-electric SUVs to its American showrooms this year, plus a few more at its Lexus luxury division. It’s like it knows something the rest of the automakers do not. Again.
