There Is a Golden Age Coming, but It Must Be Based on Free Enterprise, Not Socialism

Some new stories suggest that the Republican closing arguments for the midterm elections will focus on the riots in France. Here’s President Trump on Monday night:“If you want to see what is at stake in this election, just look at what’s happening in France, a once great nation that is being conquered, looted and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists and communists who hate Christianity.” Of the French, Mr. Trump added, “they’re losing their country. They are losing Europe. That’s never happening to the United States.”No question, this is a big threat to America, and a key risk in the elections. If the democratic socialists reopen the border and let in another 15 million or more illegals, and if at the same time they destroy ICE, and police, and then take over the economy, with a $50 trillion Medicare for all plan that would reduce GDP by nearly 15 percent. And crush wages by 28 percent, according to the Council of Economic Advisers — then we will wind up being like France. And that is devoutly to be avoided. So Mr. Trump and the GOP are right about the threat of being overrun by crazy socialists. However, that said, I would still like the President to maintain his always optimistic view of America and America’s future.Talking with Speaker Newt Gingrich yesterday, about his new book he is writing about America’s golden age: the triumph of free enterprise, the coming era of limitless possibilities, and how economic growth will surge while inflation falls, and advanced technology prevails.Take a listen to Mr. Gingrich’s optimism: “I think it’s because we inherited from the founding fathers a sense of vision, a sense of optimism.” He added: “We want to encourage inventors. We want to give them legal protection so they have an incentive. Because all the Founding Fathers were capitalists. All the Founding Fathers believed in incentive.”That’s an optimistic growth message if I’ve ever heard one. Especially in our 250th year.As long as I’ve known Mr. Gingrich, he has been an optimist, as I have been. I can’t imagine a world without optimism. My time with President Reagan cemented that optimism. And down through the years it remained, including my time with Mr. Trump.Yet we must remember that the fulfillment of the optimistic vision for America rests on free enterprise, the incentives and rewards that move people to produce and invest. Add in the rule of law. And add in a strong peace through strength defense.Optimism and freedom must be earned, it is never automatic.France, and the other socialist countries in Europe, and the state socialism in Communist China, or what we saw in Venezuela and still see in Cuba, and let us never forget the tyranny of the old Soviet Union. These are the profoundly pessimistic stories of misery and failure. So we can’t let the borders be reopened. We can’t let big government socialism run rampant again. That is why this is such a foundational election. I sincerely hope Mr. Trump stays with his optimism about the Golden Age of America’s future. And finally, I say to Republicans of all stripes: do not go wobbly. Get out to vote. It’s never too late to turn this story around. There is still time. From Mr. Kudlow’s broadcast on Fox Business Network.
