Trump-Backed Prosecutor Moves on to Second Round of Voting Against Retired Army General in Race To Succeed Marjorie Taylor Greene

A local prosecutor, Clayton Fuller, endorsed by President Trump, will face off against a Democrat and retired Army brigadier general, Shawn Harris, in the race to succeed Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. Though the seat is almost certain to remain in Republican hands after the runoff election next month, the margins on Tuesday are another sign for Democrats headed into the midterm elections. Since the beginning of Mr. Trump’s term, the most important electoral story has been Democrats flipping seats or vastly overperforming in elections across the country. Not since Mr. Trump returned to office have Republicans been able to flip a single state legislative district to red from blue. On Tuesday, Democrats got another data point showing that they are more likely than not on a path to at least with the U.S. House of Representatives, if not the U.S. Senate, as well. Mr. Fuller was endorsed by Mr. Trump earlier this year after Ms. Greene stepped down. With more than a dozen GOP candidates running in the jungle primary to succeed her, some worried that Democrats could coalesce around Mr. Harris and potentially hand him the seat in the first round of voting, or set him up to face off against a weaker Republican nominee.In the end, Mr. Harris did come in first place in Tuesday’s initial vote, taking 37 percent to Mr. Fuller’s 35 percent. The candidate who came in third place, Republican state senator Colton Moore, received just under 12 percent of the vote. In total, 17 individuals ran to serve for the remainder of Ms. Greene’s term. While Mr. Fuller is the overwhelming favorite to win the seat in April, voters gave their blessings to Democrats at higher rates than expected on Tuesday. Combined, 39.7 percent of votes were cast for Democrats, while Republicans received 59.8 percent. The result on Tuesday represents a significant shift from Mr. Trump’s dominance in the district less than 18 months ago. In 2024, he won Ms. Greene’s district by 37 points — 68 percent to 31 percent — over Vice President Kamala Harris. Democrats narrowing that margin to just 20 points represents another double-digit swing toward their party. Ms. Greene underperformed Mr. Trump in 2024, however, running behind him by about eight points, likely because of her brand as a professional political brawler that may have turned off voters who otherwise voted Republican. Still, Ms. Greene’s narrower margin of victory — 29 percent — in the last election means that Democrats were able to move the district nine points to the left on Tuesday. Hypothetically, if Democrats are able to replicate a similar swing by moving all congressional districts to the left by nine points, they would pick up about 30 seats in the midterms — far more than the three seats needed to take the majority.
