Trump’s Foes, Abandoning Tradition of First Ladies Being Off-Limits, Delight in Savaging Melania

First Lady Melania Trump is getting little sympathy after Saturday night’s assassination attempt, carrying forward a trend that mars her tenure. Much of the vitriol being aimed at President Trump comes with the job. Yet it’s new to jettison the long-standing norm that holds wives off-limits so long as they steer clear of politics.On Thursday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, the host performed a mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner joke that Mrs. Trump had “a glow like an expectant widow.” Monday on X, Mrs. Trump wrote that the remark was “corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.”Yet ABC is not expected to rein in the “hate” that, Mrs. Trump said, “shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes.” Anything done to wound Mr. Trump is considered fair play, even if it means ignoring 250 years of civility and giving in to hate.Of course, there’s nothing new under the White House roof. Eleanor Roosevelt and Senator Hillary Clinton were criticized. Yet both entered politics, which Mrs. Trump has not. She was hated for being a British aristocrat because America fought two wars with the United Kingdom in the preceding 50 years. Yet there’s no national resentment for Slovenia, only for Mrs. Trump.In 2019, “The Simpsons” set this bigotry to music. “We are more American than your wife,” Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib were depicted singing to Mr. Trump. Of “The Squad,” Ms. Omar is a naturalized citizen. All say they advocate for women and immigrants. None objected to the cartoon.Tending to the White House grounds was long a mundane, apolitical job for first ladies. Considering that the Nazis euthanized the disabled, it was a delusion of unique absurdity. Yet others also imagined that the first lady had engaged in Hitlerian horticulture.In 2018, Mrs. Trump launched her official public initiative as First Lady, the “Be Best” campaign to support the welfare of children, prevent opioid abuse, and fight cyberbullying. Critics deemed it “hypocrisy,” not because of anything she did, but by stretching the definition of “cyberbullying” to fit her husband sparring with foes on X.Mrs. Trump just isn’t allowed to be the unifying figure that has made previous first ladies more popular than their husbands. Although she was a model who graced the covers of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2000 and Vogue in 2005, no American fashion magazine has featured her since she descended the escalator at Mr. Trump’s side in 2015.When Vanity Fair considered Mrs. Trump for their cover last year, staffers revolted. By comparison, Michelle Obama appeared on the cover of Vogue three times and Jill Biden twice. Mrs. Trump said she has “no interest” in appearing anymore as she has “more important things to do,” but it illustrates her ostracization.John F. The man who slew President Garfield in 1881, Charles Guiteau, could have struck when stalking the couple on a stroll. But Lucretia “Garfield looked so thin and clung so tenderly to the president’s arm,” he said, “my heart failed me to part them.”In December 1960, Richard Pavlick packed his car with dynamite and had a chance to murder the president-elect, John F. Kennedy. Yet the politician was with his family. “I did not want to harm her,” Pavlick said of Jacqueline, “or the children,” John and Caroline.By targeting Mrs. Trump, critics like Mr. Kimmel break one of the norms that they preen about holding sacrosanct. Better to practice what they preach. Thorns come with the job for presidents, but first ladies are private citizens. Leave them alone — and free to smell the roses.
