Value of Triple Crown Questioned Amid Prep Races in Florida, Arkansas

The road to Churchill Downs enters a decisive stretch this weekend as the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby headline a pivotal Saturday in the road to the 152nd Kentucky Derby. With 100 qualifying points awarded to each winner — essentially guaranteeing a spot in the starting gate — the prep season shifts from prospects to pressure.Traditionally, this is the time when speculation about a potential Triple Crown champion begins to build. But in recent years, that conversation has grown more complicated. A changing philosophy among trainers — one that prioritizes longevity and breeding value over the grind of three races in five weeks — has raised questions about whether the sport’s most revered prize still carries the same weight.That debate intensified last year when Sovereignty, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, captured the 2025 Kentucky Derby, but bypassed the Preakness Stakes. Instead of pursuing the Triple Crown, Mr. Mott opted to give his colt additional rest before the Belmont Stakes. The strategy paid off. Sovereignty won both races but may have diminished the importance of winning the Triple Crown in the process.“The most important asset the horse industry has are the brands of the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown,” John Stuart, owner of Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, said, adding, “In this industry we take the Triple Crown for granted and as an industry we do very little to promote it and make it better.”After Sovereignty won the 151st running of the Kentucky last year, Mr. Mott elected to skip the Preakness, scheduled two weeks later, to give his thoroughbred five weeks of rest before the Belmont Stakes. In doing so, Sovereignty became the fourth in the last seven Derby winners to skip the second leg of the Triple Crown.Mr. Mott was candid about his decision at the time.“We want to give (Sovereignty) more time and take a shot at the Belmont,” Mr. Mott said. “I think the Triple Crown’s a great thing. It’s a huge challenge and any horse that does it is great. I don’t believe anybody in our camp feels strongly about it.”The two weeks between the Derby and the Preakness and the Belmont three weeks later offers a test of endurance that defines greatness. The compressed timeline tests not only talent, but durability, a combination that has produced some of the sport’s most iconic champions.But modern trainers focused on the high financial stakes of breeding, are banking on the long-term value of a horse that wins one or possibly two Triple Crown races and emerges healthy instead of risking injury and diminishing value by running in all three.The contrast was evident in last year’s Belmont Stakes. Journalism, which finished second to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby, won the Preakness two weeks later, setting up a showdown at the Belmont in Saratoga. But a rested Sovereignty ran past a tiring Journalism — the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races — and claimed a three-length victory.“It turned out good,” Mr. Mott said after the race. “If we didn’t win, we would have taken a lot of criticism. Sometimes you make the right decision.”Whether it was the right decision for the sport remains a matter for debate.What’s clear is that Sovereignty skipping the Preakness continued an alarming trend. Between 1970 and 2005, Derby runners made up 73 percent of the following Preakness fields. Since 2006, that figure has dropped to 39 percent. The potential of a Triple Crown winner is starting to sound like fake news as trainers run to breed instead of breeding to run.There has been increased discussion about spacing out the Triple Crown races and/or adding a huge financial incentive for winning all three races, but no changes are in place for this year. The 2026 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for May 2, the Preakness May 16 and the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga Race Course.Mr. Mott’s latest prospect, Chief Wallabee, is the favorite in Saturday’s Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park. He’ll be ridden by the same jockey that was aboard Sovereignty, Junior Alvarado. The son of Constitution, Chief Wallabee is a 2-to-1 choice ahead of Commandment trained by Brad Cox, and Nearly, trained by eight-time Florida Derby winner Todd Pletcher.Renegade, trained by Mr. Pletcher, is the 2-1 favorite in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn, but most eyes are on Litmus Test. Trained by Bob Baffert, Litmus Test looks to rebound from a disappointing third place finish at the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes earlier this month. Silent Tactic, trained by Mark E. Casse, and Blackout Time, trained by Kenneth G. McPeek, should also contend.The Florida and Arkansas showdowns are among the eight prep races where top finishers earn the most qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby. Winners receive 100 points and become a lock for the Derby. Second place earns 50 points, 25 points for third, 15 for fourth and 10 for fifth.Fulleffort, trained by Mr. Cox, is the current points leader with 110 with Emerging Market, trained by Mr. Brown, second with 100 points.Qualifying for the Run for the Roses is only the first step. Once the Derby winner crosses the finish line, the looming question returns of whether the Triple Crown is still the ultimate test of greatness or becoming a relic of a more daring past.
