Visa Chaos, Deportations, and Geopolitics Overshadow Opening of U.S. World Cup

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to kick off, the emerging narrative is focused more on the American border than on the soccer pitch.A sweeping wave of immigration restrictions, sudden visa revocations, and geopolitical protests has stolen the attention from the opening ceremonies set for Thursday in Mexico City. For players, match officials, and thousands of traveling fans, simply entering the United States has become an unpredictable hurdle under the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration.The latest high-profile casualty of the escalating visa crisis is Omar Artan, a trailblazing referee from Somalia. Mr. Artan, who was named Africa’s best male referee in 2025 and recently officiated the decisive leg of the African Champions League final, was slated to make history this month as the first Somali to ever referee at a World Cup. Instead, his tournament ended in a holding cell at Miami International Airport.Despite holding a valid U.S. travel visa processed by the Somali Embassy in Kenya last week, Mr. Artan was denied entry upon landing in Miami on Saturday. According to Artan, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials subjected him to a grueling 11-hour interrogation.Agents questioned his motives for entering the U.S. and pressed him extensively on Somali politics and the al-Shabab militant group, which is currently fighting an insurgency against the Somali government.Despite presenting his official FIFA documentation and photographs detailing his esteemed refereeing career, Mr. Artan was placed in a cell and subsequently deported on a connecting flight back to Istanbul, Turkey.“I think that they have a problem with my country,” Mr. Artan told The New York Times, noting he was never given an official reason for his refusal.The unprecedented deportation of a FIFA-appointed match official by a host nation drew immediate and fierce condemnation, including from former presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.“As a World Cup host, the U.S. shouldn’t be flippantly barring officials from entering the country to do their jobs,” Ms. Clinton posted on X. “It’s terribly backward. It’s also counterproductive. Global sports competitions should improve international exchange and relations, not the reverse.”Somalia is on a list of nearly 40 countries subjected to the Trump administration’s tightened travel restrictions. In a public statement issued Monday, CBP defended its actions, stating Mr. Artan was deemed inadmissible due to “vetting concerns” following a routine “additional inspection.” The agency stressed that all travelers, including World Cup personnel, are subject to case-by-case admissibility determinations based on law enforcement and national security intelligence.FIFA, which has cultivated close ties with the Trump administration to ensure a smooth tournament, effectively washed its hands of the incident. The governing body stated it is not involved in host immigration processes and confirmed Mr. Artan has been dropped from the tournament. In a statement released through FIFA, Mr. Artan struck a resilient tone: “Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood, and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career.”Mr. Artan is far from the only person finding the U.S. border impenetrable this week. An emerging crisis is currently paralyzing thousands of international fans from the 42 countries enrolled in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. The program traditionally allows citizens of participating nations to travel to the U.S. for up to 90 days without a formal embassy visa, requiring only an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).Yet, fans who had their ESTAs approved months ago are logging in this week to discover their authorizations have abruptly reverted to “pending” or have been revoked entirely.Stephen Sloan, a Scotland fan booked to fly from Glasgow to Boston on Tuesday afternoon to watch his country play Haiti in Foxboro, Massachusetts on Saturday, is living that nightmare. While Mr. Sloan’s ESTA was approved in January, his travel companion’s recently approved status was inexplicably revoked on Saturday.“If he’s unable to travel, that means I need to travel alone, which is a completely different experience. It would be far too much money to just not go,” Mr. Sloan said, noting his friend has lost an estimated $5,000 on the trip.Lauren Bis, the acting assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, defended the revocations, stating that the administration is simply enforcing the law. “Under the Visa Waiver Program, all ESTA applications are continuously vetted against law enforcement and security databases,” Ms. Bis said, warning that failure to disclose criminal history can result in immediate denial or permanent barring.Meanwhile, Iran’s soccer federation has reportedly been stripped of its allocation of World Cup tickets, which could affect the plans of hundreds of fans who were set to attend group-stage matches.Participating teams are allocated eight percent of the available tickets for their federation’s matches to be sold or distributed to fans. According to The Associated Press, most allocations went on sale after the group draw in December, when Iranians had already been subject to a U.S. government travel ban for five months.With less than a week to go before Iran opens its World Cup bid on June 15 at the 70,000-seat Los Angeles Rams’ stadium in Inglewood, Calif., against New Zealand, those tickets may no longer be guaranteed, the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran claimed in a statement obtained by the AP and Reuters.“Depriving Iranian supporters of access to their lawful and official allocation of tickets is an action contrary to the spirit governing international competitions and the principle of equality among participating countries,” it said.Iran’s national team officially touched down in Tijuana, Mexico, its new training base due to severe U.S. visa delays and denials for delegation members with alleged ties to the Revolutionary Guard.As the players deplaned, they prominently wore gold-colored lapel pins bearing the number “168.” The pins are a stark protest honoring the victims — mostly children — killed in a devastating February 28 missile strike on an elementary school in Minab, southern Iran. The strike, which hit near a Revolutionary Guard base, has been widely blamed on the U.S., though neither the U.S. nor Israel has claimed responsibility. The U.S. military has stated it is investigating the incident and does not target civilians.
