Weak Hotel Bookings Leave World Cup Financial Boom in Doubt

Just over a month before the opening kick of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning signs suggest the tournament’s long-promised economic windfall may be far less spectacular than advertised. Hotel owners across much of the United States are confronting an inconvenient reality: The World Cup tourism boom has yet to materialize.In a report released this week by the American Hotel and Lodging Association, nearly 80 percent of surveyed hotels across the 11 Amerian host cities reported that bookings for June and July are tracking below expectations.Many markets are reporting booking levels that are not only softer than expected for a World Cup summer, but in some cases lagging behind a normal June or July.The World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. But in American cities including Boston, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Kansas City, hoteliers described the tournament as bordering on a “non-event.” The findings are concerning because hotel occupancy is often viewed as one of the clearest indicators of tourism health for mega-events.“Hotels across host markets have spent years preparing for the World Cup,” the president and CEO of AHLA, Rosana Maietta, says in the report. “And while there is real excitement, the data points to a more nuanced outlook.”Kansas City, where up to 90 percent of the respondents reported bookings below the expected pace, is among the more puzzling.The city is scheduled to host six matches at Arrowhead Stadium, including a round of 32 match and a quarter-final, while serving as the Group Stage base for several major international teams, including defending champion Argentina led by Lionel Messi. Yet, bookings are trailing a typical June or July without any major event.Ms. Maietta pointed to “a range of factors” that have “tempered” early optimism, starting with FIFA itself. According to the report, FIFA initially overcommitted thousands of hotel room blocks before later releasing or canceling large portions of those reservations.Roughly half of the markets surveyed reported room block releases, forcing hotels to recalibrate pricing strategies during a critical booking period.International travel barriers have also been a major obstacle. Between 65 and 70 percent of hotel respondents said visa complications and political concerns — real or imagined — are suppressing international travel demand, a troubling trend for an event whose economic promise is built largely on foreign visitors spending money in host cities.The imbalance is already notable, with domestic travelers outpacing international visitors, according to the report. While Americans fill seats, they are less likely to generate the same tourism income as overseas travelers who book for longer stays, dine out more frequently and explore other attractions.The cost of attending the World Cup has not helped. Face-value ticket prices for even modest group-stage matches have surged beyond previous World Cup standards. Opening round tickets started around $140 for upper-deck seats but have climbed well above $1,000 depending on the matchup.Even more eye-popping, FIFA recently tripled the price for its most premium World Cup final seats at MetLife Stadium, listing front-row Category 1 tickets at $32,970.Transportations costs, from the rising price of air travel to the cost of traveling within the host cities to the matches, can range from $100 to $150 depending on the location.Miami remains one of the few bright spots with 55 percent of the hotels surveyed reporting booking ahead of expectations and above typical summer benchmarks, according to the AHLA report.Brazil, Portugal, Colombia, Uruguay, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia are scheduled to compete at Hard Rock Stadium, along with three knockout matches. The city has also worked hard to quiet concerns about the potential role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.The co-chair of Miami’s host committee, Rodney Barreto, told the Athletic he had been assured by Secretary of State Marco Rubio that “ICE is not going to be at the stadium.”Host cities across North America are estimated to have spent about $1.8 billion preparing for the tournament and the arrival of fans from across the globe. Hotels upgraded properties; local governments improved transportation infrastructure; and businesses stocked up for an anticipated wave of visitors from June 11 to July 19.But with kickoff fast approaching, the hotel data suggests the tournament’s financial legacy in the United States is looking less like a jackpot and more like another lesson in inflated expectations.
