The problem is that most of the options available are extremely boring. Having worn them for more than a month, I can say that not only are they among the most comfortable and best-made shoes in this sector, but they also have that rarest quality: character.They share the same basic framework as these other shoes: a soft, thin, single-layer leather upper attached to a flat, slightly waffled rubber sole, with a leather-and-foam combination insole. But rather than being painfully boring, they are inspired by old-school bowling shoes — hence the name — and some touches from classic German army trainers. It’s a compelling blend of modern and retro, that stands out without being flashy. Also, having a tongue that starts at the toe of the shoe means they’re easy to put on and easy to adjust precisely to your feet.My pair is in this chic retro olive shade, but they also come in retro suedes — black, and a brown that I keep being tempted by — along with the more explicitly bowling-inspired “Red Rose” and “Soft Silver” colorways.They’re well-made, characterful, and, at $185, a much better value than most luxury options in this style.
