The outgoing director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philippe de Montebello, will take a job as a professor at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, the New York Times reported Tuesday. Mr. de Montebello will teach the history and culture of museums, and will also advise the university on its visual arts offering at its new campus in Abu Dhabi, which is expected to open in 2010.

Mr. de Montebello’s appointment as a professor will become effective either in January 2009 or upon the arrival of his successor at the Met. Mr. de Montebello, who has served as the Met’s director for 31 years, announced plans to step down from his current position in January.
