One hundred forty-four emerging New York State artists will receive fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the organization announced Tuesday.
From a pool of slightly more than $1 million, each fellow will receive a stipend of $7,000, intended to cover supply costs and allow the artists to further their careers. The architects, choreographers, writers, composers, and visual artists were chosen from more than 4,500 applicants.
The majority of the fellows live in Brooklyn. This is the second year in the program’s 23-year history that the list has not been dominated by residents of Manhattan.
The filmmakers Todd Haynes and Spike Lee, playwright Tony Kushner, theater director Julie Taymor, and visual artist David Hammons are among the previous recipients.
