The New York Philharmonic’s Concerts in the Parks series has received a gift of $5 million from a member of its board of directors, Oscar Schafer, and his wife Didi, the Philharmonic announced yesterday. The gift provides funding for the popular free summer concert series for the next five years, which will help defray rising production costs. Beginning next month, the series — which presents concerts in all five boroughs, Long Island, and New Jersey — will be renamed as the New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer.
“Great New Yorkers like the Schafers, and great New York institutions, have stepped forward this year in an unprecedented manner to help secure the future of the New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, among the most popular pleasures of summer in New York,” the president and executive director of the Philharmonic, Zarin Mehta, said yesterday.
Mr. Schafer is a managing partner of O.S.S. Capital Management LP, a Wall Street hedge fund.
