MASSENA — General Motors will close its aging Powertrain plant in northern New York by the end of 2008, eliminating almost 500 jobs, the company announced yesterday.
Changes in manufacturing technology made it necessary to close the 48-year-old factory, GM’s Powertrain communications manager, Sharon Basel, said. Employees were notified of the closing yesterday, and the work will be moved to GM plants in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, she said.
The GM spokeswoman said that two product lines made at the plant are being phased out in the near future and the third by the end of 2008. Employees will be offered severance packages, she said.
Massena, near the Canadian border, is 144 miles northeast of Syracuse.
