The most surreal moment on the 500-foot-long red carpet leading up to Kodak Theatre last night came when Al Gore — wearing a Ralph Lauren tuxedo — joked with E! interviewer Ryan Seacrest about William Hung, the notoriously tone deaf 2004 “American Idol” contestant.

The rest of the Academy Awards red carpet, of course, was all about style. There was a refreshing rainbow of color: Nicole Kidman in bright red, Gwyneth Paltrow in delicate orange, Naomi Watts in buttery yellow (and looking pregnant), Kate Winslet in mint-green Valentino and Beyoncé Knowles in an Armani gown of the same color, and Portia de Rossi and Maggie Gyllenhaal in navy blue with black fringe.

The Best Actress nominee Penelope Cruz wore pale-pink Versace with a long, layered train. Jodie Foster wore dusty blue Vera Wang, and Rachel Weisz wore sleeveless champagne-colored gown by the same designer, with a row of crystals and a crystal bow along the top. Jennifer Lopez, too, sported loops of heavy crystal at the top of her blush-toned empire-waist gown.

Other fashion highlights included Anne Hathaway in Valentino, Jessica Biel in bright magenta Oscar de la Renta, Cate Blanchett in glittery Armani Privé — and Tipper Gore in a brown off-the-shoulder gown by Bill Blass.
