‘Insanity’: White House Blasts CBS News for Hiring Former Liz Cheney Staffer for Prestigious Job

Trump Administration officials are criticizing CBS News for hiring a former top aide to Congresswoman Liz Cheney – one of President Trump’s most devoted foes – to an important role as a communications staffer.New management at CBS News has recently sought to shift the network’s editorial voice to provide more balanced coverage. Lawyers at its parent company, Skydance Media, made written commitments to the Federal Communications Commission that CBS News would produce fair journalism if the government approved Skydance’s acquisition of the Tiffany Network’s parent company, Paramount Global. On Thursday, White House officials were exasperated by news that the network chose to hire a former Cheney aide, Jeremy Adler, to work in CBS’s communications department.A White House official told Axios, “The idea CBS would hire Liz Cheney’s flack who has worked to jail President Trump and make it impossible for anybody who supported the president to get hired is insanity.”“What the hell is Bari Weiss thinking?” the official said. Ms. Weiss, the pro-Israel and anti-woke founder of The Free Press, is CBS News’ new editor in chief.Mr. Adler – who had previously worked for anti-Trump Republican Congressman Paul Ryan – worked for Ms. Cheney as a deputy chief of staff from 2019 to 2023, which means he worked for the former congresswoman when she served as the vice chair of the House select committee that investigated the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Ms. Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Trump after the January 6 riot, which infuriated the president and led him to back a primary challenger.After Ms. Cheney lost her primary, Mr. Trump blasted her on Truth Social, saying that she should be “ashamed of herself” and her “spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions.” In 2024, Ms. Cheney campaigned with Vice President Harris against Mr. Trump. With his background working for Ms. Cheney and Mr. Ryan, it’s unlikely Mr. Adler had many opportunities in Washington, despite Republicans’ total control of the capital.Earlier this year, CBS News announced that it would re-sign Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster, a former Trump national security adviser, as a contributor. Despite the president reportedly despising General McMaster, the news did not draw fury from the White House.The decision to hire Mr. Adler comes as Mr. Trump has voiced frustration with CBS News for not putting an end to hostile coverage of his administration, despite the assurances from Skydance and the Ellison family — which controls Skydance — to make the network more fair.After “60 Minutes” interviewed Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former ardent Trump supporter turned critic, the president criticized the Ellisons.“For those people that think I am close with the new owners of CBS, please understand that 60 Minutes has treated me far worse since the so-called ‘takeover,’ than they have ever treated me before,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social. “If they are friends, I’d hate to see my enemies!”Larry Ellison is a Trump supporter and supporter of Israel; his son, David Ellison, is the CEO of Paramount Skydance. CBS News did not respond to the Sun’s request for comment by the time of publication.The White House’s criticism of CBS News comes as David Ellison secured victory – with reported White House support – in a bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN, beating out rival bidder Netflix. The deal will need regulatory approval from the Trump Administration. Mr. Trump’s FCC chairman, Brendan Carr, told CNBC earlier this month that he believes it is a “good deal” that will be approved “quickly.”
