Christmas in July: Why Stores Are Putting Out Fall and Winter Displays Earlier Than Ever

The Costco warehouse in Teterboro, New Jersey already had a rack of Halloween costumes for sale in late June, while some retailers have skipped straight to Christmas. If your local big box store looks like the stock clerk forgot how the calendar works, you’re not alone. Months of uncertainty around tariffs and shipping have created a boon for freight companies and headaches for supply chain managers.“Christmas inventory is arriving before anyone has even argued about pumpkin spice,” Baker Tilly’s Director of Global Trade Advisory Services Pete Mento wrote in a LinkedIn post. “Tariffs don’t care what season it is.”U.S. ports are managing a glut of shipping containers bearing tinsel, twinkle lights, and other goods ahead of fresh rounds of tariff upsets expected later this summer and into the fall. The rush to import before prices rise again has ports on track to break a new record this month, according to the Global Port Tracker produced by Hackett Associates and the National Retail Federation. U.S. ports are expecting the equivalent of 2.47 million twenty-foot shipping containers this July. The influx is set to edge past the standing record of 2.4 million set in May 2022, when shippers worked through slowdowns at major ports and lingering supply chain snarls from COVID-19 shutdowns.“ We’ve seen retailers, and frankly all shippers, moving cargo earlier than had been anticipated,” Global Port Tracker creator Daniel Hackett told The New York Sun on Monday. Hackett cited uncertainty around whether and how much tariffs will increase in later this year as a driver of the expedited cargo arrivals. A 10% global levy imposed by President Trump set to expire on July 24, but new national security tariffs on goods including copper and pharmaceuticals are coming online. New tariffs are also expected this fall that will hit goods from 60 countries where authorities have failed to keep forced labor out of their supply chains, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.Spiking fuel prices tied to disruptions in the Middle East, most notably the war in Iran, have also caused spot prices — the market cost for a one-off freight shipment — to jump, further incentivizing shippers to move up their imports.“ There’s only so many places to store your cargo once it reaches U.S.,” said Hackett. “ If cargo’s being brought in early, decision has to be made: Does it make more sense to put it on the store floor or to pay to store it in a warehouse?”
