Kash Patel Advocate Chuck Grassley Requests FBI Director Provide Receipts of FBI Jet Travel

The FBI director, Kash Patel, is facing bipartisan pressure to provide records of his frequent yet mandated use of a government plane that his critics argue has been repeatedly used for luxury trips to faraway locales under the guise of work trips.In a May 5 letter sent to Mr. Patel, Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, requested Mr. Patel “provide a list of each flight you took on an FBI aircraft, including the departure and destination, according to POLITICO. “For each trip where you used an FBI aircraft for personal travel, have you reimbursed the FBI as required by law? If yes, please provide the records,”Mr. Grassley writes, according to MSNOW, which was the first to report on the Senator’s letter.Senator Grassley also asked Mr. Patel to explain his decision to purchase a fleet of new BMW x5 SUVs in favor of the FBI’s standard armored Chevrolet Suburbans, which the FBI director argued would allow him to move about in a more covert manner. At the time, FBI spokesman Ben Williamson argued that the FBI needed to update its vehicle fleet with four new vehicles and Mr. Patel’s decision to purchase new BMWs instead of the SUVs the FBI traditionally used was “about $250k CHEAPER,” saving the agency “around $1 million.” Mr. Williamson at the time did not provide documentation or a cost breakdown comparing the BMW vehicles with the Suburbans to substantiate his claims.These were surprise requests from Senator Grassley, who had championed Mr. Patel’s nomination for FBI director and has been largely supportive of the 45-year-old’s eventful tenure in the role, which has been marked with wholesale dismissals of FBI agents with established roles, no matter how tenuous, in investigations involving President Donald Trump. During a September 2025 Senate Judiciary Hearing, Senator Grassley commended Mr. Patel for having “corrected whistleblower retaliation and increased transparency more than any other FBI Director I’ve seen, and I’ve been around here more than anyone else on this committee”Many of those FBI officials dismissed were first identified through emails and documents obtained and released by Senator Grassley, including ex-Special Agent Walter Giardina, who the 92-year-old cited as evidence of the Biden administration’s weaponized Justice Department. Mr. Giardina was dismissed in 2025 for his role in cases like the Crossfire Hurricane and Arctic Frost investigations, and the arrest of former Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro. “For decades, regardless of which political party is in the White House, I have worked to ensure that taxpayer dollars are protected from waste, fraud, and abuse,” Mr. Grassley wrote.A spokesperson for Senator Grassley could not be reached for comment. Mr. Patel came under fire for a February trip to Milan, where he was filmed drinking with the U.S. Men’s Hockey team after its gold medal victory in Italy’s Winter Olympics. That trip reportedly cost taxpayers $100,000.Mr. Patel said in a December appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast that he is required to fly on planes equipped with secure communications technology and must reimburse the government for the cost of a commercial ticket when the plane is used for personal travel.He told Ms. Miller, the wife of White House advisor Stephen Miller, that he anticipated the “scrutiny” he would face for using the jet and took additional steps to save the FBI money, which included requiring the bureau to fly in and out of government air strips like Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. “The prior two directors didn’t,” Mr. Patel added.In a separate letter sent to Mr. Patel on Wednesday, Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, and Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, accused the director of abusing government resources “in ways so outrageous that even congressional Republicans can’t ignore them.”Citing testimony from a “credible source” relayed to Senator Durbin’s staff, both Democrats allege Mr. Patel told field offices in a 2025 meeting that “if you have golf, hockey, fishing, or hunting and beautiful sights, you’re going to see a lot of me.”Messrs. Durbin and Raskin said they had received additional information regarding Mr. Patel’s August 2025 “VIP snorkel” excursion around the USS Arizona, a sunken battleship that serves as a Pearl Harbor war memorial, during a work trip to Hawaii.“Your jet-setting and the lack of justification for these trips are ‘out of control,’ and the new attaché office you established in Wellington, New Zealand, may have been opened in part to justify a sightseeing trip you took there,” both men write in their letter.An FBI spokesperson did not respond to questions from The New York Sun.
