‘Creatures’ To Replace Churchill on British Pounds

What a comedown. We speak of the decision by the Bank of England to swap out of banknotes the visages of Winston Churchill and Jane Austen for the likes of hedgehogs and badgers. The pivot to “wildlife that is native to the United Kingdom” comes after a plebiscite of some 44,000 Britons determined that fauna was the future of their currency. Bloomberg reckons that “the cigar-toting mid-century Conservative is making way for creatures.”What was wrong, though, with the “British Bulldog”? The best that can be said about this hiatus from history is that it will affect only one side of the banknotes — the monarch, who has been featured on currency since 1960, will keep his side. Yet disappearing with Churchill, who is on the five pound note, are no less a cadre than the novelist Jane Austen, from the £10 scrip, the canny code breaker Alan Turing, the 20 pound-note, and the peerless painter JMW Turner, the 50 pound note. A Tory MP calls this “wokery.”Past banknotes have featured Shakespeare, Darwin, and Adam Smith. Now that tradition is going extinct. In their place may emerge, we speculate, platypuses and geckos — if cash itself doesn’t go extinct. UK Finance tabulates that cash made up 48 percent of payments in 2014, a share that plunged to nine percent by 2024. The bank’s chief cashier explains that “nature is a great choice from a banknote authentication perspective.”What happened to “England, My England.” In 2013, the then-governor of the Bank of England reasoned that “It seems entirely appropriate to put Sir Winston on what is probably our most popular note” — the fiver. Now, President Trump declares that Prime Minister Keir Starmer “is no Winston Churchill,” and Bloomberg ventures that “the removal of national icons from the notes still risks contention at a moment where the Labour government has cloaked itself in an anxious patriotism.”The Bank of England plans a second vote over the summer to determine the plants, landscapes, and animals that will be printed on pounds. The bank explains that the options “will not include household pets as part of the theme” — so, no, say, Pembroke Welsh Corgis of the kind adored by Queen Elizabeth II. Candidates will be furnished by a “panel of wildlife experts.” Perhaps they can look to, say “Lush Places,” featured in Evelyn Waugh’s “Scoop.”Waugh called that book a “light-hearted tale” that was the “fruit of a time of general anxiety and distress.” That could well describe this moment as well. The statue of Churchill at Parliament Square was boxed up during riots in 2020, and last month was defaced with slogans like “Zionist war criminal” and “Free Palestine.” Never mind that as early as 1908 Churchill declared that “I am in full sympathy with the historical traditional aspirations of the Jews.”Some Britons are seeking to stand athwart the proposed change. One MP, Kevin Holinrake, insists that “Britain’s banknotes should celebrate the people who shaped our country and our history. Replacing legendary figures like Winston Churchill and Jane Austen with animals is total bonkers.” Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg ventures that “Notes use symbolism to express power and value, twee little furry things do neither.” Wild animals and weeds might be fitting for a fiat currency, though Britain, rather than elevate some aardvark, could add to the roster of historic figures. Maybe, say, Lord Arthur Balfour, the premier whose declaration put London on the right side of the Jewish question. His portrait at Cambridge, a painting from 1914 by Philip Alexius de László, was slashed by an anti-Israel fanatic. The police have failed to act. Putting his portrait on a pound would be a fine response.
