The Voice of Hind Rajab, directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, captures an indisputable tragedy: the final moments of six-year-old Hind Rajab, trapped in a car surrounded by the bodies of her aunt, uncle, and cousins in war-torn Gaza. Using actual audio clips from the girl’s desperate phone calls for help, the film presents a harrowing depiction of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society’s frantic, and ultimately unsuccessful, efforts to save her.The film garnered critical acclaim, including a record-breaking 23-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize. It was shortlisted at the 98th Academy Awards and later nominated for Best International Feature.Media reviews were similarly effusive. Film critic Robbie Collin compared The Voice of Hind Rajab’s “calm artistic rigour that transcends shock value” to Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour endorsed the director’s declaration that the film is not merely “a story” but “history.”Yet a media watchdog, HonestReporting, warns that the documentary glosses over essential context and presents disputed events as settled facts. The film, the group argues, marks the emergence of a troubling new cinematic genre — one positioning Palestinian wartime narratives alongside Holocaust cinema in terms of moral weight and historical certainty.The watchdog group cites the film’s setting as an example. By positioning the story almost entirely inside Palestinian Red Crescent offices in Ramallah, miles from Gaza, the film never shows viewers the chaotic battlefield conditions on the ground.Other crucial omissions include the lack of acknowledgement of Hamas, its invasion of Israel on October 7, 2023 that started the war, or the hostages that Hamas kidnapped and held in Gaza. By excluding Hamas’s documented practice of embedding terrorists in emergency vehicles, the film strips away crucial context for understanding Israel’s protocols for coordination before ambulances can move freely in combat zones. “This absence is not accidental,” HonestReporting argues. “By removing the story entirely from the physical and military context in which it occurred, the film achieves narrative purity at the cost of reality. The war becomes an abstraction. Violence becomes intent. And responsibility becomes singular.” Such context is particularly important when key details of the incident remain disputed. Unresolved inconsistencies in the varying accounts of the ordeal include shifting descriptions of the vehicle’s movement, unexplained timeline gaps, contested audio analysis suggesting crossfire rather than deliberate targeting, and more. “The more difficult film to make — the braver one — would have resisted that flattening,” HonestReporting writes. “It would have situated Hind Rajab’s death within the full horror of the war that preceded it: a conflict ignited by Hamas’s massacre of Israeli civilians; a prolonged campaign against a terror group embedded in dense urban areas; a battlefield where civilians, including children, were trapped in conditions no filmmaker could render without confronting uncomfortable truths.” The Voice of Hind Rajab is not the only film on the Middle East conflict stirring controversy this awards season. Palestine 36, a drama about the 1930s Arab revolt in British-governed Palestine, has been accused of sweeping historical inaccuracies and functioning as “propaganda by subtraction.” That film also made the 2026 Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature, though it failed to secure a final nomination.
