For calorie counters who dread the impending holiday feasts, Jones Soda Co. has come up with a solution – save yourself 2,000 calories and drink your Thanksgiving dinner instead.
This season, the company has come out with limited-edition packs of sodas containing five holiday flavors – Turkey & Gravy, Mashed Potato, Green Bean Casserole, Cranberry, and Fruitcake – all calorie and carbohydrate free, as well as being vegan and kosher. Priced at $15.95, the gift packs are available at Target stores and through Jones Soda distributors. A portion of the proceeds will go toward Toys for Tots.
So how does green bean casserole soda taste? After cleansing our palates with Diet Coke with Lime, the few brave souls conducting our taste test went down the list of flavors in the order that they would be eaten at the dinner table. First came the Turkey & Gravy, then Mashed Potato, Green Bean Casserole, Cranberry, and finally, Fruitcake. Our tasting notes follow.
TURKEY & GRAVY SODA The aroma was unconvincing, and the sickeningly sweet but simultaneously salty flavor was a little off, too. The consistency was heavy and almost creamy.
MASHED POTATO SODA This had the most true-to-life smell, with a bouquet reminiscent of Potato Buds. The butter notes overpowered the subtle hint of potato, however.
GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE SODA Its pea-green color was the first sign that nothing good could come of this bottle. The smell was so bad, we didn’t want to taste it, but for the sake of journalism, we braved a sip. Never again.
CRANBERRY SODA Cranberry sauce is always one of the best parts of Thanksgiving dinner, and the drinkable version was quite pleasant. The vibrant red color was appealing, and the sweet fruity flavor was almost normal. We might consider drinking this again.
FRUITCAKE SODA For dessert, this sweet taste wasn’t bad. It was the favorite of the five because it most reminded us of cola, but with an unusually intense smell.
