PARIS – More bad news from France for the European Union: A new opinion poll coming out today suggests that most French voters would reject the E.U. constitution if a referendum were held today.
The French will not be called on to vote until May 29,but the poll is the second in less than a week indicating that France could strike down the E.U.’s historic attempt to adopt a constitution.
French President Jacques Chirac warned Friday that France would be “totally isolated” in Europe if it votes to reject the E.U. constitution.
In the poll conducted for Le Figaro newspaper, 52% of respondents said they would oppose the constitution if a vote were held next week, with 48% in favor.
Another problem could be abstention. Some 52% of those polled said they were undecided over whether they would even bother to vote.
The survey, to be published in Le Figaro, polled 860 registered voters by telephone between March 18-19. No margin of error was given, but polls of that size generally have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
A poll published Thursday showed 51% of French opposed the E.U. constitution, rattling France’s political class and drawing swift calls for a “yes” vote.
For the constitution to take effect, all 25 E.U. members must approve it. France is the next country to vote on the charter. Three nations have passed the treaty in parliament, and Spain approved it in a referendum last month.
