Sri Lankan Troops Kill 53 Tamil Tigers in North

BANGALORE, India — Sri Lankan troops killed at least 53 Tamil Tigers and injured more than 80 rebels in separate gun battles in the South Asian island’s northern province, a military spokesman said. Three soldiers were killed and 20 military personnel were injured in an artillery attack by the rebels in Mannar region and two soldiers were killed and six injured during firefights in Vavuniya and Wanni regions, Udaya Nanayakkara said yesterday in a telephone interview from the capital Colombo. “The battle was fierce in north of Mannar where 23 rebels were killed yesterday. We have captured some of the rebel-held areas in Adampan area of Mannar,” he said.
