Like all good antiques fairs, next weekend’s New York/New Year Antiques & Fine Art Festival will be rich in history lessons, as well as one-of-a-kind treasures and museum-quality rarities. Take, for instance, the vivid yellow bowl pictured below. Its distinctive color is not only beautiful, but marks the piece as an exemplar of the once-revolutionary Peking Glass style that flourished in the imperial workshops of the Ching Dynasty in China (1644-1911). The bowl is only one of the countless Asian antiquities on offer at the second annual fair, to be held at the Seventh Regiment Armory. Also on sale will be turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorative fine arts, Scandinavian art glass from the 1950s and 1960s, and a wide assortment of estate and vintage costume jewelry. Entry-level collectors can invest $2,500 in a tiny unglazed Tang horse; those more experienced can peruse the wide selection of traditionally scare Korean artifacts; while fashionistas can add a Mario Buccellatti brooch to their collections.
The Second New York/New Year Antiques & Fine Art Festival at the Seventh Regiment Armory, Park Avenue at 67th Street, January 7 and 8 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and January 9 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m; admission $12. A preview will be held January 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; admission $35 for the weekend. For more information call 310-287-1896 or visit www.theosatco.com.
