MIAMI — Moments after Rory McIlroy secured his place in history with a second consecutive Masters title at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, congratulations arrived swiftly — and from a familiar, and once controversial corner of the sport.President Trump, whose relationship with professional golf has mirrored his political fortunes, praised Mr. McIlroy on social media while subtly promoting his own return to the PGA Tour spotlight.“Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters!” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social, adding, “I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral.”The PGA Tour is set to return to Trump National’s Blue Monster course in Doral for the 2026 Cadillac Championship scheduled from April 29 to May 3. The tournament has been designated as a signature event, ensuring it will attract the world’s top golfers competing for $20 million in prize money.A Reunion Years in the MakingThe return of the PGA Tour to Doral outside Miami will be a triumph for Mr. Trump as much as a curtain call for Mr. McIlroy, now a six-time major winner. Doral has a rich legacy featuring past champions such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Lee Trevino, Billy Casper, Raymond Floyd, Greg Norman, Ben Crenshaw, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, who won four times at the Blue Monster, including a memorable “Duel at Doral” with Mr. Mickelson in 2005.McIlroy Takes Center StageThe 2026 Cadillac Championship will attract a world-class field, but the headliner will be Mr. McIlroy, who has now joined Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Mr. Woods as the only back-to-back winners of the Masters.Mr. McIlroy finished 12-under par to claim a one-stroke victory over two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and two shots ahead of a trio of golfers. The finish wasn’t as dramatic as his playoff triumph over Justin Rose a year ago that earned him not only his first Green Jacket but also a career Grand Slam for capturing the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and British Open. LIV Golf’s 2026 schedule has events planned for Trump National in Virginia in May and Bedminster in August, marking the first time Trump courses will host the PGA Tour and LIV Golf in the same year. The first time Trump Bedminster hosted LIV Golf in 2022, it drew criticism from 9/11 victims’ families who were angered that LIV Golf was financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.Timing and tensionMr. Trump’s return to golf’s spotlight comes amid growing tension over the war with Iran and criticism in some circles of his foreign and domestic policies.Mr. Trump has not let those issues impact his sports fandom. On Saturday, he attended UFC 327 in Miami, his first sporting appearance since the start of the Iran war. Mr. Trump walked into the arena to chants of “USA, USA” before taking a seat alongside the UFC president, Dana White.With Mr. Trump in the building, the UFC debuted a promo video for its planned event at the White House scheduled for June 14 to honor America’s 250 birthday and Mr. Trump’s 80th birthday.Social media critics panned Mr. Trump for attending the sporting event with Secretary of State Marco Rubio while peace talks with Iran, led by Vice President Vance, fell apart in Pakistan.“Whether we make a deal or not makes no difference to me,” Mr. Trump told reporters while traveling to the UFC fight. “And the reason is because we’ve won.”While the timing in political terms might be sketchy, the Cadillac arrives at the perfect time for the PGA Tour. The Masters proved there is life after Mr. Woods, who has five Green Jackets; he and Mr. Mickelson, a three-time Masters winner, were both absent for the first time since 1994.Mr. McIlroy claimed his second Green Jacket, but Mr. Scheffler and budding stars like Cameron Young, Sam Burns, Jake Knapp along with steady veterans like Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele, and Jason Day have kept the PGA Tour intriguing.Meanwhile, LIV golfers continue to struggle in the majors. Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have already left the LIV Tour, while its biggest names like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau never contended at Augusta.
