Music Industry Launches AI Labeling Initiative for Streaming Platforms

A coalition of major music industry organizations has unveiled a new voluntary labeling program aimed at helping fans identify AI-generated music on streaming platforms, as AI-created songs continue to flood digital marketplaces at an unprecedented rate.Led by the Recording Industry Association of America and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the initiative proposes two distinct labels: an “AI-generated” logo for songs created wholly or mostly by AI, and an “AI-assisted” logo for recordings that are substantially human-made but incorporate AI for certain creative elements. The program mirrors how explicit content is currently flagged on streaming services.The coalition includes other music industry organizations like the Recording Academy and the Human Artistry Campaign. While the disclosures are described as voluntary and “designed to evolve as technology and requirements change,” the groups say they plan to work with digital music services, distributors, aggregators, and standard-setting bodies on industry-wide implementation.“Fans want to know whether and how generative AI has been used in the music to which they listen,” the IFPI CEO, Vikki Oakley, and the RIAA chairman and CEO, Mitch Glazier, said in a joint statement. “These labels will provide an immediately understandable and easily scalable approach to transparency.”The initiative comes at a pivotal moment. Apple Music recently announced that roughly one-third of its daily uploads are AI-generated — a trend that has facilitated streaming fraud, given how easily bad actors can mass-produce and upload new recordings.The Recording Academy CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., framed the initiative as a matter of artistic integrity. “This initiative ensures that creativity, authorship, and artistic intent remain at the center of every song,” he said, according to Hollywood Reporter. “Giving artists the ability to tell that story strengthens trust and supports a more sustainable future for music.”SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, echoed that sentiment: “Transparency is essential, but it is only the beginning. Fans deserve to know when the music they hear is AI-generated or AI-assisted, and performers deserve a marketplace that recognizes, values, and protects human creativity.”Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal have already introduced their own voluntary AI disclosure systems, with Spotify reporting “tens of thousands of AI credits submitted daily.” However, widespread voluntary compliance remains uncertain, as creators have little incentive to self-report given the lingering stigma around AI-generated music.AI music platform Suno said it supports transparency and is investing in watermarking and audio fingerprinting tools, while emphasizing that “it should be up to artists and platforms to decide how to treat these complex issues.”
