Poll: Senator Allen, Jim Webb Are Neck and Neck
RICHMOND, Va. — Senator Allen, a Republican, and his Democratic challenger, Jim Webb, are still locked in a close race, according to a statewide poll published yesterday. Mr. Allen was favored by 49% of those surveyed last week and Mr. Webb was the choice of 47%, the Washington Post poll found. Two percent backed Gail Parker and 2% were undecided.

Burns Struggles To Retain Mont. Voters
CONRAD, Mont. — Senator Burns, in the fight of his political life against Democrat Jon Tester, has been citing such home-state money and projects to try to convince voters that they should re-elect him. The race has become a referendum on Mr. Burns, who took, and has since given away, about $150,000 in campaign contributions from Abramoff.

Minn. Senate Candidates Clash on Iraq War
WASHINGTON — Candidates in Minnesota’s closely watched Senate race clashed yesterday on Iraq, with the Republican defending his vote to authorize the war. “You can’t really play TiVo and rewind,” Rep. Mark Kennedy said. During a debate on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he was asked whether he would still vote for the war knowing that Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction. “I stand by my vote,” he said. Democrat Amy Klobuchar, the Hennepin County attorney, said, “You cannot solve a problem that you don’t admit exists, and that is what’s going on here with the congressman,” she said.

Poll: Granholm Has Slight Lead Over DeVos In Mich. Governor’s Race
LANSING, Mich. — A poll published yesterday shows Governor Granholm, a Democrat, slightly ahead of Republican challenger Dick DeVos, with less than a month to go before the election. In the telephone poll of 643 likely voters by Des Moines, Iowa-based Selzer & Co., 49% said they’d choose Ms. Granholm if the election were held today, 41% chose Mr. DeVos and 10% were listed as “other/not sure.” The poll published by the Detroit Free Press was conducted October 8 through Wednesday for the newspaper and Detroit television station WDIV.
