PRESIDENT CLINTON SAYS HE IS ‘READY’ TO CAMPAIGN FOR OBAMA

President Clinton said yesterday he is eager to campaign for Senator Obama whenever the Democrat needs him, but he has not given any thought to whether he wants to speak at the party convention in Denver. Relations between Messrs. Clinton and Obama have only just begun to thaw since Mr. Obama defeated the former president’s wife in the bruising Democratic primary that ended last month. Throughout that bare-knuckle race, Mr. Clinton had portrayed Mr. Obama as too inexperienced to be president. Since Mr. Obama clinched the nomination, it has remained an open question as to what role Mr. Clinton would play in campaigning for him and how he could best be used at the convention. Weeks ago, Mr. Obama called the former president to ask for his help in winning the White House. At a news conference in New York for work that his foundation is doing, Mr. Clinton said he had not thought about whether he would like to be a convention speaker. Mr. Clinton said he had a “good talk” with Mr. Obama on the phone and is eager to get out on the road for the Illinois senator. “I told him that whenever he wanted me to do it, I was ready, and so it’s basically on their time table,” Mr. Clinton said.

OBAMA SAYS ATTACKS ON HIS WIFE ARE ‘INFURIATING’

Senator Obama says attacks on his wife are “infuriating,” and he blames the conservative press for drumming up a storyline that paints her as unpatriotic. “It’s infuriating, but it’s not surprising,” Mr. Obama says in an interview to be published in Glamour magazine. Conservatives have criticized Michelle Obama for saying earlier this year that she was proud of her country “for the first time in my adult life” because of her husband’s presidential campaign. Despite rebuke from the McCain campaign, state Republican committees have used that clip in videos attacking Mr. and Mrs. Obama. The Washington State Republican Party became the latest entity to use the clip, releasing a video yesterday ahead of a visit by Mrs. Obama in which the state party chairwoman and other activists explain their pride in America. The state’s Democratic governor, Christine Gregoire, said in a statement the video was “shameless.” In the Glamour interview, Mr. Obama said he was fine with attacks on himself but not his wife. “I don’t have a thick skin when it comes to criticism of my wife,” he said. The Illinois senator called Mrs. Obama “the most quintessentially American woman I know.”

MCCAIN SAYS HE IS RECEIVING SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS

Senator McCain says he is receiving Social Security checks, but he says the system needs to be fixed if future generations are to enjoy the same benefits. The senator from Arizona is about a month shy of his 72nd birthday and would be the oldest president elected. Last week, Mr. McCain said the system for funding Social Security is “a disgrace” because it forces young workers to pay into a program that is unlikely to benefit them in its current form.
