WASHINGTON — Adding yet more momentum to her surging presidential campaign, Senator Clinton has picked up the endorsement of the influential 1.4 million-member American Federation of Teachers.
The endorsement was announced here yesterday at a meeting of the union’s executive council, where Mrs. Clinton was greeted with cheers and a standing ovation. It came one day after news that the Clinton campaign soundly defeated its chief Democratic rival, Senator Obama of Illinois, in third-quarter fund-raising, along with the release of a Washington Post-ABC News poll that showed the former first lady opening a 33-point lead among voters nationwide.
The AFT backing was also said to be aided by Mrs. Clinton’s close bond with the president of the union’s affiliate in New York City, Randi Weingarten, who sat nearby at yesterday’s announcement.
