A construction worker fell 15 stories to his death today in an accident on the Verrazano Bridge, police officials said.
The 59-year-old victim from Manhattan, who police have not yet identified because they have been unable to reach his family, fell about 150 feet to a patch of land on the Brooklyn side of the bridge at about 1:30 p.m. after getting knocked off of a wooden catwalk, police said.
Leading up to the accident, a crew for the El Sol Construction Company was rearranging jersey barriers, concrete blocks that are often used to separate traffic lanes, on the lower level of the Staten Island bound section of the bridge. One of the barriers fell onto the wooden scaffolding the victim was standing, causing him to lose his balance, police said.
