Changes are expected in coming weeks to the PATH Transportation hub planned for the former World Trade Center site.
In a memo yesterday, Governor Spitzer’s selection to serve as executive director of the Port Authority, Anthony Shorris, outlined a contractor’s cost estimates for the project that run as high as $1.2 billion above the initial projections of $2.2 billion.
Mr. Shorris said the Port Authority would not tolerate cost increases of that magnitude, and “will need to consider a range of options for completing the project.”
Mr. Shorris said changes would seek to preserve “overall integrity” of the design by architect Santiago Calatrava, including the signature “wing ” component at street level.
The presence of a large increase in cost projections and the likelihood of a considerably scaled back design were first reported February 2 in the New York Sun.
