Council Overrides Veto On Landlords

The City Council overrode a veto by Mayor Bloomberg yesterday, clearing the way for a new law that bans landlords from rejecting tenants who pay their rent with government aid.
Mr. Bloomberg vetoed the bill, which landlords say unfairly forces them to enter into a government bureaucracy they feel is flawed, last month. Proponents of the bill say turning away tenants based on their source of income is a form of discrimination.
“I’m sorry we have to override this veto, but we think it is the right thing to do for the tenants and the citizens of New York City,” the speaker of the City Council, Christine Quinn, said yesterday.
