A 70-year-old man was found murdered in the bedroom of his Murray Hill apartment, police said yesterday.
The man, identified as Jose Prieto by police had been strangled and hit on the back with a blunt object, according to the office of the Medical Examiner.
Prieto’s body was discovered after his brother came to check on him because he hadn’t been answering the phone, a neighbor, Paul Cooper, 60, said. Police said it didn’t appear to be a robbery, and that there was no forced entry.
Mr. Cooper said Prieto lived alone, but had many friends in the building. “He was a very polite neighbor,” Mr. Cooper said. “It’s a disturbing mystery.”
