The Guggenheim Museum’s exterior will be painted the same light gray it was in 1992 following a debate yesterday in front of the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Preservationist groups, such as the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts and the Historic Districts Council, had argued that the facade should be painted the yellow buff it sported briefly after it opened in 1959. Some believe the museum’s architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, had intended the exterior to be the light golden color, but the more familiar off-white prevailed in a 7-2 vote before the commission.
