Two City Council members are urging the city to eliminate a ‘rental payment’ tax on water, a move they say would spare New Yorkers of future water rate hikes.
Water rates increased by 11.5% yesterday, the highest increase in 15 years.
The Water Board pays the city for use of its water delivery infrastructure. That cost is in turn borne by water ratepayers in the form a ‘rental payment’ tax, the Council members, David Weprin and James Gennaro, said.
Water rate increases flow into the city’s general budget, which has a surplus of more than $4 billion, the Council members said.
