The new Metropolitan Transportation Authority fares that will go into effect next week will raise monthly unlimited ride Metro-Cards to $81 from $76, and weekly passes to $25 from $24. While customers that purchase rides at the $2 base fare will remain unaffected, the 86% of straphangers that purchase the discounted cards will have to pay more at the turnstiles.
The MTA approved the fare hike last December despite protest from elected officials and commuter groups. The agency projects a fare hike will help it avoid a projected deficit.
