New York City has received a $12 million federal grant to develop a contamination warning system for its drinking water supply.

The Environmental Protection Agency funds will be used for a system that checks water quality with online monitoring. The Water Security Initiative is a pilot program that also has started in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is expected to be duplicated around the country.

Mayor Bloomberg and environmental officials announced the grant yesterday.

New York officials say they’ll use computer technology to check for contaminants in the water.

The city’s water supply system serves nearly 8 million city residents and 1 million people in the suburbs.
