FIRST LADY SIGNS DECLARATION TO COMBAT MALARIA IN AFRICA

The first lady, Laura Bush, signed a declaration yesterday at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, along with representatives of Angola, Tanzania, and Uganda, to accelerate President Bush’s $1.2 billion initiative to combat malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. The document calls for cooperation among the American and African governments, organizations such as Unicef and the Red Cross, and corporations such as ExxonMobil. “By forming partnerships like this, like the one that we’re creating tonight, we can expand the available resources and cover all the vulnerable people in highly endemic countries in Africa,” Mrs. Bush said. “This is an enormous undertaking, but it’s within reach.”

CABBIES IMPROVE THEIR PEOPLE SKILLS, REPORT FINDS

Cab drivers are improving their people skills, statistics from the Mayor’s Management Report show. The number of complaints has dropped by 8% since 2004. Fewer complaints are being issued about cab drivers who refuse service, down 22.7%, exhibit rude behavior, down 26.5%, or are abusive, down 22%. The Taxi and Limousine Commissioner, Matthew Daus, attributes the drop to the city’s hotline, 311, which he said deters unprofessional behavior. Established in November 2003, last year was the first full year of service for the hotline, which is now widely used. “For the first time, members of the public are the eyes and ears of the TLC, 24-7 on the streets of the city,” Mr. Daus said.

NYPD INTRODUCES PODCASTS

The New York Police Department launched its latest method to deliver data to the public: podcasts. “It’s another way to get information out in a contemporary way,” the police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, said yesterday. Through its Web site, people all over the world can access and listen to a five-minute message or download it to an MP3 player, Mr. Kelly said. In addition, people can subscribe to have free weekly messages sent to them automatically.

The department, Mr. Kelly said, “intends to use this for updating information” and informing the public about things such as street closings, crime prevention tips, and commendable work by police officers. Although the target audience is people between ages 14 and 24,”older folks” can use it too, Mr. Kelly said. He has had an MP3 player for the last couple of years.

WORKERS INJURED AT CONSTRUCTION SITES

Two groups of workers were injured at construction sites in unrelated incidents yesterday in Brooklyn, Fire Department officials said. At 9:30 a.m., two private contractors were performing construction on a house at 1580 East New York Ave. at St. Marks Avenue when part of the floor collapsed. They were taken to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center with minor injuries, authorities said. A little more than two hours earlier, a number of Consolidated Edison employees were working near the Gowanus Expressway at 276 56th St. at Second Avenue when one of the workers was pinned by a Hilo crane, Fire Department officials said. The crane reportedly ran over his foot. He was taken to Lutheran Medical Center with minor foot injuries.
