NYPD Officer Is Slain in Afghanistan

A New York Police Department lieutenant has died at Afghanistan on a tour as a National Guardsman.

The Department of Defense says 1st Lieutenant Daniel Farkas died on the Fourth of July from injuries suffered in a non-hostile incident at Kabul. It’s investigating.

The 42-year-old Farkas was from Brooklyn. He joined the NYPD in 1988 and was assigned to the 112th Precinct in Queens.

The Department of Defense says in the National Guard he was assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in upstate Syracuse.
