A Crown Heights man was fatally shot inside his minivan early yesterday morning, and police are calling his death a homicide.
Frederick Klein, 47, of Union Street in Brooklyn, was moving his blue Dodge Caravan around 1:30 a.m. when a bullet pierced his arm and hit him in the chest. According to police reports, his van struck several parked cars along Carroll Street near Utica Avenue before coming to a standstill. Police said they found Klein slumped over the wheel, and a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office confirmed he died from a single gunshot wound.
According to friends, Klein was scheduled to travel to Israel next week to celebrate his son’s wedding. Klein, the father of one son and two daughters, was someone who “always had a smile on his face,” Chanina Sperlin, the executive vice president of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, said. The council is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
Elected officials, including Brooklyn President Marty Markowitz, City Council Member Letitia James, and others, joined mourners at Klein’s funeral yesterday. At a subsequent press conference, officials denounced gun violence.
